Brazilian Apitong (Angelim Pedra) for Truck Trailer Decking 7" & 5"

2x harder than Malaysian Apitong,    2 1/2x harder than Oak.  Scroll Down for profiles

Brazilian Apitong is 2x harder than Malaysian Apitong hence it lasts longer for Truck Trailer Bed Decking.

Apitong is better suited than any other wood in the world for trailer decking because of its durability, affordability and sustainability. Brazilian Apitong (aka Angelim) and Malaysian Apitong (aka Keruing) are both marketed for this purpose.

Janka is a commonly used hardness rating system used for lumber -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janka_Wood_Hardness_Rating.

Jankas demonstrate that Brazilian Apitong is twice as hard as Malaysian Apitong: Brazilian Apitong - 3040 Malaysian Apitong - 1520

The excellent hardness / durability rating of Brazilian Apitong makes it superior to Malaysian Apitong for Trailer decking.

CIRAD - Forestry Department - http://www.cirad.fr/en/index.php, has published in depth reports on both of these species comparing durability, strength, hardness, finishes required, susceptibility to termites and rot and use recommendations. These reports, clearly underlining the superiority of Brazilian Apitong for exterior uses exposed to weather, are attached here:

Trailer Length Decking

The shipping and handling costs of bringing 40’ to 48’ long boards from Brazil are so high that nobody will pay to bring them here. The harvesting process would also be wasteful and expensive. We’ve figured out how to provide full length boards at a fraction of the cost without the logistical headache of handling and shipping 40’ boards.

ABSWood provides mills end-kerfed (grooved) boards that provide for the same “seamless” deck as full length boards. Using sub floor adhesive, 4” Brazilian hardwood biscuits are fastened into the end grooves of two contiguous boards to bind and seal the ends together.

Besides the seamless seal, this continuous board method also relieves the need for the joint to rest on a support beam. This dramatically reduces waste. Having experienced end rot of previous decks, many trailer owners prefer full length boards and can not get long boards at a reasonable price that will resist rot and weather.

Continuous length deck boards made from Brazilian Apitong decking provide the rot proof seamless trailer deck that is the right deck for everyone. See photo and call us with your questions.
